Elvira Morris (center)

Elvira (Mom) Morris was a great prayer warrior who brought a depth of wisdom and experience to our board. Elvira was instrumental in the launching of this ministry. She served actively on the board of directors from its founding in 1997 until her retirement in 2003. After that time she remained involved as an emeritus board member, a dear friend, and a wonderful example of faithfulness and prayer.

Elvira Lorana (James) Morris went to her heavenly home Sunday, June 8, 2008, at the age of 91. Elva was dearly loved by family and friends and those who met her and cared for her near the end of her life.

She married her high school sweetheart, David Chew, at age 18, and enjoyed a close marriage until he was taken by kidney disease after only a few short years. In 1943, she married Henry F. Morris Jr. and became part of a family which included his son, Donald Wayne Morris, now of Brooklet, Ga. She later had two children, Henry Ferguson "Chip" Morris III of Austin, Texas, and Betsy Hutton of St. Louis, Mo.

At the time of her death, she was believed to be the oldest living resident of her hometown, Sewell, N.J., and the oldest living graduate of the Pitman High School Class of 1934. She was baptized in Sewell Community Baptist Church, and years later joined First Baptist Church of Woodbury, N.J.

For seven years, she and her family spent winters in Thomasville, Ga., where they enjoyed the company of extended family and many dear friends.

Elva was a history buff. She enjoyed homemaking, the large Morris family summer picnics, gardening and wearing colorful hats. She was a health-conscious cook and loved to freeze Jersey fruits and vegetables to savor during winter months.

She and her husband retired after his 69 years in the nursery business and moved to Florida. She soon grew restless and, with her faith deepening, Elva and Harry moved to Lynchburg, Virginia where as their own form of mission, they housed seminary student couples from Liberty Baptist Seminary. They made many dear friends in Lynchburg while attending Thomas Road Baptist Church and later Rivermont Presbyterian Church.

After being widowed in 1991, Elva remained in Lynchburg for a few years, then moved to Austin, Texas, to be near her son. While she was able, she attended Hillcrest Baptist Church and later Great Hills Baptist Church. She drove (safely) in her Toyota Avalon until she was 90.

Elva is survived by the son of her husband, Donald Wayne Morris (Donna); and children, Donald Jr. (Jennifer), Michael (Christie) and Sharon McSpadden (Mike). Also surviving are former daughter-in-law, Suzie Kim Morris; son, Chip Morris (Jan); and children, Kimberly and Vanessa. Also surviving are daughter, Betsy Hutton (Bill), and son, Alex Hutton (Lark). She is also survived by her 11 great-grandchildren.

We want to thank the staff at Buckner Villas for their special care for mother in her last weeks.

There are no services. Elva willed her body to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Those wishing to share remembrances of Elva are invited to comment on www.legacy.com. Elva’s family has suggested that contributions in her honor may be made to One Another Ministries.
